Charlie Allen (born Charles E. Allen on May 1, 1942 – died May 7, 1990) was a talented American musician. He was a founding member and the lead singer of the popular blues and rock band, Pacific Gas & Electric. Charlie Allen is best known for co-writing and singing the band's big hit song, "Are You Ready?" This song was so popular that other famous groups like The Staple Singers also sang their own versions of it.

Joining Pacific Gas & Electric

Charlie Allen first joined the band, then called the Pacific Gas And Electric Blues Band, as their drummer. But his amazing singing voice quickly made him the perfect choice to be the band's frontman. This meant he would be the main singer, standing at the front of the stage.

After Charlie became the lead singer, Frank Cook, who used to play drums for the band Canned Heat, took over as the drummer. Charlie Allen remained the lead singer for Pacific Gas & Electric until the band eventually broke up.

Rising to Fame

The band quickly became very popular. They performed at many concerts alongside other well-known bands of their time. Their music was also featured in a movie called Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon, directed by Otto Preminger. The film starred famous actors like Liza Minnelli.

Charlie Allen was also a gifted songwriter. He wrote several songs for the band's albums. On their third album, which was self-titled, he wrote songs like "Bluesbuster" and "Miss Lucy". He also co-wrote "My Women" with Tom Marshall and "Death Row #172" with John Hill. Another song he wrote, "Mother, Why Do You Cry?", appeared on the Are You Ready? album.

Over time, the band's members changed. When their fourth album came out, the band's name was shortened to just PG&E.

Solo Album

In 1973, the very last album featuring Charlie Allen was released. It was called Pacific Gas & Electric starring Charlie Allen. By this time, Charlie was the only original member left in the band. Because of this, the album was almost like his first solo album, even though it still used the band's name.

Charlie Allen's Life

Charlie Allen passed away in 1990. He was 48 years old, and he died just six days after his birthday.
