Charlotte Marguerite de Montmorency (born May 11, 1594 – died December 2, 1650) was an important noblewoman in France. She inherited a lot of wealth and land from one of France's leading families. She became the Princess de Condé when she married Henri de Bourbon. King Henry IV of France was very interested in Charlotte. To avoid the king's close attention, her husband took her away from France right after their wedding. They did not return until after King Henry's death.

Life Story

Charlotte Marguerite was the daughter of Henri de Montmorency and his second wife, Louise de Budos. Sadly, Charlotte's mother passed away before Charlotte was five years old. After this, Charlotte was raised by her aunt, Charlotte, who was the widow of Charles, Duke d'Angoulême.

In 1609, when Charlotte-Marguerite was fifteen, she married the Prince of Condé. Their wedding was a very grand and sparkling event.

King Henry IV had arranged Charlotte's marriage to Condé. The king wanted Charlotte to stay close to him. To escape this situation, Charlotte and her husband quickly left France and went to Brussels. The king was very angry about this. He demanded that the couple be returned to France. At that time, the king was also involved in other important political matters.

Later, Charlotte's husband, along with many other French nobles, did not agree with the way Marshal d'Ancre was ruling. Marshal d'Ancre had changed the policies of the late King Henry IV. Because of this disagreement, in September 1616, Condé and Charlotte-Marguerite were arrested. They were held in Vincennes prison. Their daughter, Anne Geneviève, was born there in 1619.

In 1632, Charlotte-Marguerite's only brother, Henri, Duke de Montmorency, was executed. This happened because he was plotting against Cardinal Richelieu, a powerful leader in France. After her brother's death, Charlotte inherited his important title. Charlotte Marguerite was buried at a Carmelite convent in Paris.
