Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charlotte Jemima Henrietta Maria Paston, Countess of Yarmouth (born around 1650 – died 28 July 1684) was one of the many children of Charles II of England. Her father, Charles II, was the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Charlotte's mother was Elizabeth Killigrew Boyle. Elizabeth was married to Francis Boyle, who later became Viscount Shannon in Ireland. Before Charlotte was born, her mother, Elizabeth, worked as a maid of honour for Charles II's mother, Queen Henrietta Maria. This meant Elizabeth was an important lady who attended to the Queen.

Charlotte first married James Howard. They had one daughter named Stuarta. Later, in 1672, Charlotte married William Paston. William later became the second Earl of Yarmouth. His family, the Pastons, were very important people in England. Both William and his father were well-liked by the royal family, the Stuarts.

Charlotte passed away on 28 July 1684 in London. She was buried a few days later, on 4 August 1684, at Westminster Abbey. This is a very famous church in London where many important people are buried.

Her Family and Royal Connections

Charlotte FitzRoy was a member of the royal family, even though she was not born to a queen. Her father, King Charles II, had many children with different women. Charlotte was one of these children. Being connected to the King meant she had a special place in society. Her life was part of the history of the House of Stuart, the royal family that ruled England at that time.

Marriages and Children

Charlotte FitzRoy had children from both of her marriages. Her family grew to include many important people in English society.

Stuarta Howard: Her First Daughter

With her first husband, James Howard (who died in 1669), Lady Charlotte had a daughter named Stuarta Werburge Howard. Stuarta lived until 1706 and never married.

Stuarta was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary II. This meant she helped the Queen with her daily tasks and was part of her royal court. Stuarta was almost married to the 1st Earl of Portland. However, their plans to marry did not work out. This led to a serious disagreement between Lord Portland and Stuarta's stepfather, William Paston, the Earl of Yarmouth.
