Life of Charlotte Tidswell

Charlotte Tidswell was born in 1759 or 1760. Her father might have been a soldier. She probably started acting when she was quite young. Her name was first mentioned when she performed in a play called "The Busy Body" at Drury Lane theatre. This theatre became her main stage for many years.

Her Connection to Edmund Kean

In 1787, a famous actor named Edmund Kean was born. No one knows for sure who his mother was. Many people thought Charlotte Tidswell, who was known as "Aunt Tid," might have been his mother. She certainly acted like a mother to him. She cared for him and helped him as he grew into an amazing young actor. She also guided his career.

Her Acting Career

Charlotte Tidswell acted during the winter months at Drury Lane. She never played the main character in a play. She often moved homes, probably because she didn't earn a lot of money. She made about three pounds a week. Later, she would get a special performance each year where all the money went to her.

During the summer, she would act in other places, usually in Liverpool or sometimes in Brighton. In the winter, she sometimes played well-known Shakespearean roles. For example, she played the Duchess of York in Richard III. She also played Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet. Even though she never had the biggest roles, critics often noticed her performances.

Retirement and Later Life

Charlotte Tidswell was a respected actress. She decided to retire on May 21, 1822. It was a tradition to have a special performance for actors when they retired. Edmund Kean was there to help with her farewell show. He thanked everyone who came on her behalf.

Charlotte returned Kean's kindness. As he grew older, she took care of him at his home in Richmond. Edmund Kean passed away in 1833. Charlotte Tidswell died at her home in Chelsea in 1846.
