Charlton Deron McIlwain (born 1971) is an American professor and writer. He is an expert on how race and media affect politics and daily life. Professor McIlwain teaches media, culture, and communication at New York University (NYU). He is also the Vice Provost for Faculty Engagement and Development there. This means he helps support and develop the university's teachers and researchers.
Early Life and Education
Charlton Deron McIlwain was born in 1971. His parents were Annie and Ronald McIlwain, and they lived in Charlotte.
He went to Oklahoma Baptist University and earned a bachelor's degree in family psychology in 1994. Later, he studied at the University of Oklahoma. He received a master's degree in Human Relations. In 2001, he earned his PhD in communication from the same university. A PhD is the highest degree you can get in a field of study.
Career at NYU
Professor McIlwain started teaching at NYU in 2001. Today, he is a full professor of Media, Culture, and Communication. He also holds an important leadership role as Vice Provost for Faculty Engagement and Development. In this role, he works to make sure professors have the resources they need to do their best work.
Important Books and Writings
Charlton McIlwain has written several important books. One of his well-known books is Black Software: The Internet and Racial Justice, From the Afronet to Black Lives Matter. This book looks at how the internet has been used in the fight for racial justice. He also wrote Race Appeal: How Candidates Invoke Race in U.S. Political Campaigns with Stephen M. Caliendo. This book explores how politicians talk about race during elections.
He has also edited a book called The Routledge Companion to Race & Ethnicity. Besides books, Professor McIlwain has written many articles for academic journals. These are special magazines where experts share their research. He has also written books like When Death Goes Pop: Death, Media and the Remaking of Community and Death in Black & White: Death, Ritual & Family Ecology.

In 2007, Charlton McIlwain married Raechel Lee Adams. She is a trial lawyer. Their wedding took place in Washington, D.C..
