Political Career
Charmaine Williams has worked in both local and provincial politics. Politics is the way groups of people make decisions for a city, province, or country.
Starting in City Politics
In 2018, Williams decided to run for a seat on the Brampton City Council. A city council is a group of elected people who make decisions for a city. During her campaign, she talked about ideas for making the community safer.
On October 22, 2018, she won the election. This was a historic moment because she became the first black woman ever elected to Brampton's City Council.
In 2022, while she was running for a provincial government position, a special vote happened at the city council. The council voted to choose someone to take her place ahead of time if she won the provincial election and had to leave her city council job. A court later said this early decision was not allowed under the rules for municipalities.
Moving to Provincial Politics
In 2022, Williams ran in the Ontario provincial election. A provincial election is when people across Ontario vote for who they want to represent them in the provincial government. She ran as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party.
On June 2, 2022, she won the election for the Brampton Centre area, defeating the previous representative, Sara Singh.
A few weeks later, on June 24, 2022, she was given an important job in the Ontario government. She was named the Associate Minister of Women's Social and Economic Opportunity. This made her the first black person to be appointed to a cabinet position in an Ontario PC government.
