History of Chatmoss
The name Chatmoss comes from a very large piece of land. This land was once a 2,700-acre (11 square kilometer) plantation owned by the Hairston family. A plantation was a large farm where crops were grown, often using the labor of enslaved people. Later, this land became part of a country club.
The name "Chatmoss" might come from a big swampy area in England called "Chat Moss." That English swamp might have been named after a saint or an old word for "wood." It could also come from an old English name combined with "mos," meaning "swamp."
Before dams were built, the low areas around Chatmoss were very wet. They were like a swamp and often flooded from a nearby stream called Leatherwood Creek.
The Hairston family owned many plantations. They had them in different states like North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Virginia. In Henry County, they owned places like Beaver Creek Plantation. The Chatmoss property was owned by Harden Hairston for a long time. Later, his family sold it to people who built the country club there.
