Chats, also known as Chat, was a small place that used to be a settlement in Lassen County, California. It was located in a mountain area, about 4,810 feet (1,466 meters) above sea level. This former community was once shown on maps as late as 1894.

What Was Chats?

Chats was a "former settlement." This means it was once a place where people lived and worked, but it is no longer an active community today. Many such places existed in the past, especially near important travel routes.

Where Was Chats Located?

Chats was situated in Lassen County, California. It was near the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway, which was an important train line. The settlement was about 2 miles (3.2 km) east-southeast of a place called Beckwourth Pass. It was also about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southeast of Summit.

The Post Office at Chat

Even though Chats was a small place, it had its own post office. The Chat post office was open for two periods. It first operated from 1885 to 1894. Then, it reopened and ran from 1896 to 1900. Having a post office meant that people living there could send and receive mail. This was very important for communication back then.

The Name of Chats

The name "Chat" or "Chats" has a special origin. It comes from a Native American language. This shows a connection to the original people who lived in this area long before the settlement was established.
