Cheers Beacon Hill: The Famous TV Bar
The TV show Cheers used the Bull & Finch Pub as its main inspiration. The outside of the bar you saw in the show was actually the Bull & Finch! Inside, they even built a special area that looks just like the bar from the TV show. This lets visitors feel like they're stepping right into the world of Cheers.
In 1982, Boston magazine even said the Bull & Finch was the best bar in Boston!
Big Celebrations at the Bar
On May 20, 1993, the very last episode of Cheers was shown. To celebrate, the owner, Tom Kershaw, threw a huge party outside the bar. Lots of people gathered to watch the finale on big TV screens set up just for the event. The actors from Cheers watched the episode inside the bar.
The TV show The Tonight Show with Jay Leno even broadcast live from this party! The host, Jay Leno, went inside the bar to talk to the actors and other famous people like sportscaster Bob Costas. Later, Jay Leno played fun games with the Cheers cast inside. At the end of the show, the famous Cheers theme song played outside the bar.
Other Cheers Locations
For many years, from 2001 to 2020, there was another Cheers location called Cheers Faneuil Hall. This second spot was in Faneuil Hall, another famous part of Boston. To make it feel like the TV show, this location had a special replica of the TV bar inside. On its last day, there was a live band playing the Cheers theme song. The owner, Tom Kershaw, was there, and they even gave away a copy of the script for the very last episode of the show!
The owner of Cheers Beacon Hill is Thomas A. Kershaw. He also owns other restaurants nearby, like the Hampshire House (which is upstairs from Cheers), 75 Chestnut, and 75 Liberty Wharf.
Honoring a Longtime Bartender
On March 10, 2009, a newspaper called Boston Globe shared some news. Eddie Doyle, a bartender who had worked at Cheers for 35 years (even before the TV show started!), had to leave his job. The owner, Tom Kershaw, said it was because of tough economic times. To honor Eddie, the street block where Cheers is located was renamed Eddie Doyle Square.
