Chen Ding (Chinese: 陈定; born August 5, 1992, in Baoshan, Yunnan, China) is a Chinese racewalker. He is famous for winning a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. He finished his race in a record time of 1:18:46. He also won a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.
Career Highlights
Olympic Gold in London
At the 2012 London Olympic Games, Chen Ding made history. He became the first Chinese male athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in the 20-kilometer racewalk event. This was a huge achievement for him and his country.
He is also the second Chinese male athlete to win a gold medal in any athletics event at the Olympics. The first was Liu Xiang, who won gold in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Chen Ding finished his race in an amazing 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 46 seconds. This time set a new Olympic record for the event. He achieved this just one day before his birthday, calling it a "wonderful gift." His teammates, Wang Zhen and Cai Zelin, also did well, finishing third and fourth. Guatemala's Erick Barrondo won the silver medal, coming in second place.
World Championships Success
In 2013, Chen Ding continued his success at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. He won another gold medal in the 20-kilometer racewalk. He was awarded the gold after the original winner was disqualified.
