Chenequa is a small village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, in the United States. It's known for its beautiful lakes. The village includes all of Pine Lake, part of North Lake, and a western section of Beaver Lake.
In 2020, about 526 people lived in Chenequa. The village was officially created in 1928.

History of Chenequa Village
Early Settlers and Village Formation
The first people to settle in this area were Gustaf Unonius and his wife, Charlotta Margareta Ohrstromer. They arrived with their nursemaid, Christine Soedergren, and two other people, Carl Groth and Wilhelm Pearmain.
Chenequa became an official village in 1928. Wealthy people from Milwaukee, who owned summer homes here, wanted better police protection. They decided that forming their own village would allow them to have their own police department.
Legal Challenges and Lake Access
The nearby Town of Merton didn't want Chenequa to become a separate village. They were worried about losing tax money. Many residents of Merton also signed petitions against it.
In January 1928, a court decided that Chenequa could indeed become a village. The judge also said that the public would still have access to the lakes. He pointed out that a public road already touched the lake. There were also three hotels where everyone was welcome to enjoy the lake.
Historic Lakeside Homes
Many of the families who own property around Pine Lake and Beaver Lake today are descendants of important business owners. These families from Milwaukee and Chicago built their large summer homes, often called mansions, in the late 1800s.

Chenequa is located at coordinates 43.123399 degrees North and -88.381173 degrees West.
The village covers a total area of about 4.71 square miles (12.00 square kilometers). Out of this, about 3.54 square miles (8.98 square kilometers) is land. The remaining 1.17 square miles (3.02 square kilometers) is water.
Lakes and Public Access
Chenequa includes parts of three lakes: Beaver Lake, North Lake, and Pine Lake. People can access Pine Lake and Beaver Lake. However, there is no public access to North Lake.

2010 Census Details
According to the 2010 census, 590 people lived in Chenequa. There were 232 households and 186 families. The population density was about 166.7 people per square mile.
Most residents, about 96.9%, identified as White. A small number of residents were African American, Native American, or Asian. About 1.0% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
About 27.2% of households had children under 18 living with them. Most households, 74.1%, were married couples living together. The average household had 2.54 people. The average family had 2.82 people.
The median age in the village was 50.6 years. About 21.7% of residents were under 18. About 22.7% were 65 years or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (49.0%) and females (51.0%).
Between 2008 and 2012, the estimated median household income in Chenequa was $174,583. This means that half of the households earned more than this amount, and half earned less.
Education in Chenequa
University Lake School is a private school that was founded by residents of Chenequa. Some of its founders include Herbert Brumder, Robert Brumder, Robert Manegold, and John M. Friend. John Friend was the school's first president.
