History of Cheneyville
This town got its name from an early settler named William Cheney.
Religious History and the Restoration Movement
Cheneyville is important in the history of a religious movement called the Restoration Movement. This movement is connected to a leader named Alexander Campbell. In 1843, many members of a Baptist church in Cheneyville decided to join the Churches of Christ. This happened because their leader, William Prince Ford, was inspired by Campbell's ideas.
The Cheneyville Christian Church is the oldest church linked to the Restoration Movement in Louisiana. In 1857, Alexander Campbell himself visited the church. He was very impressed by how well people of different races got along there.
Solomon Northup's Story
William Prince Ford, the church leader, is also known for being the first owner of Solomon Northup. Solomon Northup was an African-American man who was born free. However, he was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841. He was then sold to Ford in New Orleans.
Solomon Northup's amazing and difficult life story was later made into a feature film called Twelve Years a Slave. This movie helps people understand what he went through.
