Feature movie facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A feature movie (also called a feature film) is a movie that is long enough to be the main show at a movie theater. When you buy a ticket, the feature movie is usually the main film you go to see. Different groups have slightly different ideas about how long a feature movie should be. For example, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (who give out the Oscars) says a feature movie is at least 40 minutes long. The Screen Actors Guild, which represents actors, says it's 80 minutes or longer.

Most feature movies you see today are usually between 70 and 210 minutes long. Movies made for children are often a bit shorter, typically between 70 and 105 minutes.

The First Feature Films

The very first feature movie, based on its length, was The Story of the Kelly Gang. It was released in Australia in 1906. This film was about the famous Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.

The first feature-length movie that was based on a book was Les Misérables. This movie came out in 1909. Other early feature movies include a version of Oliver Twist (1912), Richard III (1912), and From the Manger to the Cross (1912).
