Cheneyville is a small community in Illinois, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government like a city or village. Cheneyville is located within Grant Township in Vermilion County.

History of Cheneyville

Cheneyville was officially started in 1871. Its layout, or "plat," was mapped out in 1880. The community was named after J. H. Cheney. He was an important person, serving as the vice-president of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad.

In 1888, a telephone system was set up in Cheneyville. People liked it so much that more lines were needed very soon. This shows how quickly the community grew and adopted new technology.

Where is Cheneyville?

Cheneyville is located at coordinates 40.4692031 degrees North and -87.5847437 degrees West. It sits about four miles east of a village called Hoopeston. The community is also less than two miles south of Vermilion County's northern border.

A railroad line, the Kankakee, Beaverville and Southern Railroad, runs right through Cheneyville. Also, Illinois Route 9 is a main road that passes about half a mile south of the community.
