Chenopodium desertorum, also known as the frosted goosefruit, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the plant family Amaranthaceae. This plant naturally grows in Australia. You can find it in all the main states across the country.
Discovering the Frosted Goosefruit
The frosted goosefruit was first studied and named by a scientist named John McConnell Black. He first described it in 1922. At that time, he called it Chenopodium microphyllum var. desertorum.
Later, in 1924, John McConnell Black looked at the plant again. He then decided to give it its current name, Chenopodium desertorum. This is the name we use today.
What are Subspecies?
Sometimes, plants that are the same species can have small differences. These slightly different versions are called subspecies. Think of it like different breeds of dogs – they are all dogs, but they look a bit different. The frosted goosefruit has several accepted subspecies. Each one has its own unique features.
Here are the different subspecies of Chenopodium desertorum:
- Chenopodium desertorum subsp. desertorum
- Chenopodium desertorum subsp. anidiophyllum (Aellen) Paul G.Wilson
- Chenopodium desertorum subsp. microphyllum Paul G.Wilson
- Chenopodium desertorum subsp. rectum Paul G.Wilson
