Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann (born June 21, 1963 – died August 5, 2022), known as Cherie Gil, was a famous Filipino actress. She worked in movies, TV shows, and plays for almost 50 years. People called her "La Primera Contravida" which means "The Prime Villain." This was because she was very good at playing bad guys in her roles.
Cherie Gil won many awards for her acting. She received the FAMAS Award and was honored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. She is also a Hall of Famer at the Metro Manila Film Festival for Best Supporting Actress. In 2015, she won Best Actress at the ASEAN International Film Awards. The same year, she also won Best Lead Actress at the Madrid International Film Festival. In 2019, she won Best Supporting Actress at the 42nd Gawad Urian Awards for her role in the movie Citizen Jake.
She started acting when she was only 9 years old. She is most famous for her role as Lavinia Arguelles in the movie Bituing Walang Ningning (1985). In this movie, she said a very famous line: "You're nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!"

Early Life
Cherie Gil was born on June 21, 1963. Her real name was Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann. She came from a family of actors. Her parents were Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, who were also famous actors. She had two brothers, Michael de Mesa and Mark Gil, who were also actors. She also had a half-sister named Elaine Eigenmann.
Career Highlights
Cherie Gil started acting when she was very young. This was because her parents and siblings were already in showbiz. At first, she played roles like a daughter or a friend. In 1978, she got her first main role in the movie Bubot na Bayabas.
In 1979, she was relaunched in the movie Problem Child. She then appeared in many films by Regal Films. She also worked as a freelance actress in other movies. In 1982, she played a young woman during World War II in the movie Oro, Plata, Mata. She also tried singing and had a song called "I Love You, Boy." On TV, she was a co-host on Germspesyal and a regular on Champoy.
In 1985, Cherie Gil became very well-known for playing villains. She played Lavinia Arguelles in Bituing Walang Ningning. Her character was a famous but insecure singer. This role made her famous for the line, "You're nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!" After this, she often played stylish and strong villain roles.
She acted in many popular TV shows, called teleseryes, on ABS-CBN and GMA Network. She also performed in theater plays. She won a Best Actress award in 2014 for her one-woman show Full Gallop.
In 2010, she starred in the fantasy series Grazilda on GMA Network. She also joined the cast of Magic Palayok in 2011. Later that year, she was in Time of My Life.
In 2016, she received the Ani ng Dangal award. This was because she won Best Actress at The ASEAN Film Festival for her role in Sonata. She also won Best Actress in a foreign film at The Madrid Film Festival for her role in MANA in the same year.
Her last TV show was Legal Wives on GMA Network in 2021.
Later Life and Passing
In October 2021, Cherie Gil found out she had a rare type of endometrial cancer. She decided to keep this information private. In February 2022, she stopped her acting career. She moved to the United States to be with her children. She also shaved her head to show her personal growth.
Cherie Gil passed away on August 5, 2022, in New York City. She was receiving treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her brother, Michael, said that her remains were cremated in New York. Some of her ashes were scattered in Bukidnon, which was her favorite place.
Personal Life
Cherie Gil was married to Rony Rogoff, who is an Israeli violinist. They had a daughter and a son together. Their marriage ended in 2008 after 20 years. She also had an older son from a previous relationship with actor Leo Martinez. After her separation from Rony Rogoff, her two children with him lived with their father in Israel. Her eldest son stayed with her in the Philippines. Eventually, all three of her children lived in the United States.
