Cherise's Music Journey
Starting with Big Brovaz (2002–2006)
Cherise and her friend Nadia began their music careers in the R&B group Big Brovaz. The group became very popular after they started in 2002. Before Big Brovaz became famous, Cherise was already a singer. She recorded her solo album Look Inside and the song "2nd Best". This album was highly praised and even won a MOBO Award.
Big Brovaz had several hit songs, like "Favourite Things" and "Nu Flow". These songs reached the top five on the music charts. Fans and critics loved their unique style. Some even compared them to famous artists like Outkast and Eminem.
Later, the group released a song called "Baby Boy". People had high hopes for it because of their past hits. However, the song only reached number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. After this, one of the female members, Dion, left the band. Their record label then decided not to work with them anymore. This meant the group didn't release a new album for three years. In 2007, they released Re-Entry, but it did not sell well.
Forming Booty Luv (2006–2009)
The idea for Booty Luv came about while Big Brovaz was working on their Re-Entry album. Music executives asked Cherise and Nadia if they wanted to record a new version of Tweet's club hit "Boogie 2nite". Since Big Brovaz's songs weren't selling well in mid-2006, the girls agreed.
They started recording their new version of "Boogie 2nite". At first, it was just a song to promote the record label Hed Kandi. But six months later, in December, "Boogie 2nite" by Booty Luv was officially released as a single. This happened because club DJs loved it. The song became a huge hit, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was only beaten by Take That's song, "Patience".
"Boogie 2nite" Success
In late 2006, the music video for "Boogie 2nite" was shown on top music channels. The song was promoted a lot. The version remixed by Seamus Haji was used for downloads and CDs. The video featured a remix by the group DB Boulevard. The song was also very popular on digital music video channels. It reached number one on "The Hits Most Selected" and "TMF Hitlist UK".
The song was available for download a week before the physical CD came out. It quickly went to number one on the 3 Download Chart. This helped it climb the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 19 from downloads alone. After the CD was released, it jumped to number 2. It also became their first number 1 song on the UK Dance Charts. "Boogie 2nite" stayed in the UK Top 75 for 17 weeks. Because of its success, Booty Luv signed a contract for four more songs and an album with Hed Kandi.
More Hit Songs
In 2007, Booty Luv spent several months recording their first album. Then, they released their next song, "Shine", on May 14. This was a cover of a Luther Vandross song. Radio stations loved it, and it was added to the A-List on BBC Radio 1. It reached number 17 on the UK Airplay Chart. In its first week, "Shine" entered the UK Singles Chart at number 25 from downloads. The next week, it jumped 15 spots to number 10 after its physical release. It stayed in the UK Top 40 for seven weeks and also hit number one on the UK Dance Charts.
Their first album, Boogie 2nite, came out on September 17, 2007. A week before, their third song, "Don't Mess with My Man", reached number 11 on the UK Top 20. This song was a cover of a Lucy Pearl song. It also hit number 1 on the UK Dance Charts, making it their third number 1 dance hit.
The album Boogie 2nite included their three hit songs: "Boogie 2nite", "Shine", and "Don't Mess with My Man". It also had a new cover song and five original songs. One of these original songs, "Some Kinda Rush", became another UK Top 20 hit. Booty Luv helped write the album with two other writers. On September 24, 2007, Boogie 2nite entered the UK Albums Chart at number 11. It was later certified Silver, meaning it sold over 70,000 copies.
"Some Kinda Rush" and Future Plans
"Some Kinda Rush" was the fourth song released from the album. It was the first original song by the group. Even before its official release, the song started selling well from the album. It entered the UK Top 100 at number 93. It then became Booty Luv's fourth straight UK Top 20 hit, reaching number 19. "Some Kinda Rush" stayed in the UK Top 40 for seven weeks. The album Boogie 2nite also became popular again because of this song.
A fifth song from the album, "Dance Dance", was released in Europe in 2008. It reached the Top 5 on the Netherlands' Dance Chart and number 27 on their main chart.
Nadia and Cherise said in an interview in 2007 that they planned to start working on their second album in 2008. They wanted the new album to have only original songs, with no cover versions. In 2009, Nadia shared that they were working with many different producers. She said the new album would have "an edgier style" and a mix of R&B, dance, and pop songs. Cherise mentioned they worked with Fraser T. Smith, who produced a number one hit for Tinchy Stryder. Their song with him is called "One Dance".
The first song from their new album was "Say It". It was first played on April 10, 2009. The girls performed it at the Sony Ericsson Dance Nation Festival. This song had a more electronic sound than their previous music. "Say It" was released on August 31, 2009. It was featured on the official Hed Kandi website and YouTube. The song was added to BBC Radio 1's B-List and then moved to the A-List. It continued the band's success, reaching number 16 on the UK Top 20 on September 6, 2009.
The band is still creating new music. A new song was expected to be released in autumn 2011.
