Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cherokee Springs is a small place in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Discovering Cherokee Springs' Past

The community of Cherokee Springs got its name from the Cherokee people. The Cherokee were a large and important Native American tribe. They lived in this area for a very long time before European settlers arrived.

The Popular Mineral Spa

In the late 1800s, Cherokee Springs became a very popular place to visit. It was known as a mineral spa resort. People believed that the natural spring water there had special healing powers because of the minerals in it. Visitors would come to drink the water or bathe in it, hoping to feel better or relax. These resorts were very fashionable during that time, like a fancy vacation spot today.

The Old Post Office

For a while, the community was simply called Cherokee. A post office with the name Cherokee opened in 1888. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, but it closed down in 1933.
