The Journey of Cherry Brook
The Cherry Brook starts its journey high up on the open moorland. It begins about one kilometre north of a place called Lower White Tor. From there, it flows mostly towards the south.
Past Powder Mills
As the Cherry Brook flows, it passes by a historic site called Powder Mills. This was once a factory in the 1800s. People used to make gunpowder there. Today, you can still see some of the old buildings and ruins.
Under Bridges and Roads
Further along its path, the Cherry Brook flows under a special type of bridge. This is called a clapper bridge. A clapper bridge is an old bridge made from large, flat stone slabs. These slabs are supported by stone piers. After this bridge, the brook turns to flow east for a short distance. It then goes under the B3212 road at a spot known as Higher Cherrybrook Bridge.
The river then continues its journey southwards. It flows past the east side of a hill called Smith Hill. Eventually, it reaches the B3357 road at Lower Cherrybrook Bridge.
Joining Other Waters
At Lower Cherrybrook Bridge, another small stream joins the Cherry Brook. This stream is called the Muddilake Brook. The Muddilake Brook starts just west of Crockern Tor. After this meeting, the Cherry Brook winds its way down through the landscape.
Meeting the West Dart River
Finally, the Cherry Brook reaches its destination. It flows into the West Dart River near a place called Sherberton. The West Dart River is a much larger river. It eventually becomes part of the famous River Dart. The Cherry Brook adds its waters to this bigger river system.
