Cheryl Artise Gray Evans (born 1968, New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American lawyer and politician. She served as a representative for District 5 in the Louisiana State Senate. She resigned from this role in 2009. Before that, she was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 98.

Early Life and Education

Cheryl Gray Evans grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended Eleanor McMain Magnet Secondary Senior High School. After high school, she went to Stanford University. There, she was part of the track team. She also joined a sorority called Delta Sigma Theta. She earned her college degree in 1990.

After finishing at Stanford, she returned to New Orleans. She then studied law at the Tulane University Law School. She earned her law degree in 1993. After becoming a lawyer, she worked at Gray & Gray Law Firm in New Orleans. Her parents had started this law firm.

Political Career

Cheryl Gray Evans is a member of the Democratic Party. She was known for being part of a group that wanted to make changes in the Orleans Parish Democratic Party. This group often worked with a political organization called the Black Organization for Leadership Development (BOLD).

In 2008, Gray Evans ran for a seat in the Louisiana State Senate. She won the election for Senate District 5. This seat became open because the previous senator, Diana Bajoie, could not run again due to term limits. Gray Evans was also a critic of how the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) handled the recovery after Hurricane Katrina.

Personal Life

Cheryl Gray Evans has been involved in many activities and received several awards. She attends Asia Baptist Church in New Orleans. She is married to Patrick Evans. He used to be a news anchor and reporter for television and radio in New Orleans. He also worked as the Communications Director for New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

In late 2009, Cheryl Gray Evans left her position in the Louisiana Legislature. She moved to Connecticut to be with her husband. At that time, he had started serving in the Navy as a public affairs officer.
