The Chevry Lomday Mishnayes Synagogue is a special old building in Hartford, Connecticut. It used to be a synagogue, which is a Jewish place of worship. Built in 1924, it looks a bit like an apartment building, which is quite unusual for a church or synagogue! A Jewish group called an Orthodox congregation met here until 1963. Today, it is home to the House of God Church. This building is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

About the Building

This historic building is located in Hartford's Clay-Arsenal neighborhood. It is made of red bricks with cool orange and yellow brick designs. The building has three floors and a roof that slopes gently.

Special Features

The windows on the upper floors are rounded at the top. These round windows are framed with bricks placed upright, which are called "soldier bricks." The windows on the second floor at the front of the building have special wedge-shaped stones called "keystones" at their top.

There are also round windows in the middle of the second and third floors on the front. The second-floor round window now has a cross design inside it. The third-floor round window still shows a Star of David, which is a symbol of Judaism.

Building's History

The Chevry Lomday Mishnayes ("Society for Study of Mishnah") was an Orthodox Jewish group. They started in 1918 and met in different places before this synagogue was built.

From Synagogue to Church

The building was finished in 1924. It was designed to look like a regular three-story apartment building, but with special changes to the second and third-floor windows. The Jewish congregation used this building until 1963. After that, they moved to a private home. Since then, different Christian groups have used the building. Most recently, it has been the House of God Church.

National Recognition

This building is one of many important synagogues in Connecticut. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This happened as part of a big project that listed many historic synagogues in the state.
