The Chevry Lomday Mishnayes Synagogue is a special old building in Hartford, Connecticut. It was built in 1924. This building used to be a synagogue, which is a place of worship for people who practice Judaism. What makes it interesting is that it looks a lot like an apartment building! From 1924 until 1963, it was home to an Orthodox Jewish group. Today, it is used by the House of God Church. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

About the Building

The old Chevry Lomday Mishnayes Synagogue is located in a part of Hartford called Clay-Arsenal. It sits at the corner of Mather and Bedford Streets. The building is made of red bricks. It also has orange and yellow bricks used for decoration.

Building Design

This building has three floors. It has a roof that is not very steep. The windows on the upper floors are shaped like round arches. These windows are framed with special bricks. The windows on the front of the second floor even have decorative "keystones" above them.

Special Windows

On the front of the building, there are round windows in the middle of the second and third floors. The window on the second floor now has a cross inside it. The window on the third floor still shows a Star of David. The Star of David is a symbol of Judaism.

History of the Synagogue

The Chevry Lomday Mishnayes group was an Orthodox Jewish congregation. An Orthodox Jewish congregation follows traditional Jewish laws and customs. The group started in 1918. Before this building was constructed, they met in different places.

Building's Original Purpose

The synagogue building was finished in 1924. It was designed to look like a regular three-story apartment building. The main changes were the shapes of the windows on the second and third floors. The Jewish congregation used this building until 1963. After that, they moved to a private home.

New Use for the Building

Since 1963, different Christian groups have used the building. Most recently, it has been home to the House of God Church.

National Recognition

In 1995, this building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical places across the United States. It was one of many synagogues in Connecticut added to the list around that time.
