Nguyễn Thùy Chi (born June 14, 1993), known as Chi Pu, is a Vietnamese actress and singer. She became famous for her main roles in TV shows like Waterdrop, Happy Dream, and 5S Online. Chi Pu began her singing career in 2017. In 2020, Forbes magazine named her one of Asia Pacific's 100 most important digital stars.
Life and Career Highlights
Early Life and Rise to Fame
Chi Pu was born on June 14, 1993, in Hanoi, Vietnam. Her father works in the Vietnamese military. Her mother is an English teacher. She also has an older sister who works in banking.
Chi Pu first became known after she placed in the Top 20 of Miss Teen Vietnam in 2009. After this, she joined the entertainment world. She quickly became a popular teen idol. By November 2016, she had the most followers among Vietnamese actresses on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Acting Career Beginnings
In 2013, Chi Pu started her acting career. She played main roles in TV dramas like Waterdrop and Happy Dream. Both shows were shown on Vietnam National Television. That same year, she joined 5S Online, a popular Vietnamese TV series.
She also produced and acted in her first short film, Under One Sky. This film was very well-liked by viewers and critics. It even won a Golden Kite Award in 2014. Later in 2013, Chi Pu appeared in her first full-length movie, Thần tượng (The Talent). This movie won six Golden Kite Awards. Chi Pu also acted in the horror movies Chung cư ma (Hush) and Hương Ga (Rise). Hương Ga won Best Vietnamese Film at a festival in San Francisco in 2016.
Continued Success in Film and TV
In 2014, Chi Pu played the main role in the TV drama Vẫn có em bên đời (You’re Always by my Side). This drama was very popular. It helped Chi Pu win an HTV Award for Most Favorite Television Drama Actress.
That same year, Chi Pu produced and acted in her second short movie, My Sunshine. This movie received good reviews for its message supporting the LGBT community. In 2015, Chi Pu had a main role in Yêu (Love). This movie, which also supported the LGBT community, earned a lot of money very quickly. It won the Golden Apricot Blossom Awards for Best Movie in 2015. Chi Pu was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Yêu.
Hosting and Music Ventures
In 2015, Chi Pu was the backstage host for Dancing with the Stars Kids Vietnam - Season 2. In 2016, she was one of the two hosts for The Voice Kids Vietnam - Season 4. Chi Pu also judged several beauty and style contests.
Chi Pu lent her voice to the character Glim in the French animated movie Mune: Guardian of the Moon. She also took part in the musical Thiên đài (The Rooftop). This musical was based on a famous movie by Chinese artist Jay Chou.
In 2016, Chi Pu created her first web series called Wake Up. This series had seven episodes and was shown on V Live and YouTube. Chi Pu produced, helped write, starred in, and sang the main song for the series. In July 2016, she performed her song "Fighting Fighting" at a music event in Bali, Indonesia. In November 2016, Chi Pu attended the first Asia Artist Awards in Seoul, Korea.
She also released several songs before officially starting her singing career. These included "Fighting Fighting" and "Stay with me". She earned third place in Dancing with the Stars Vietnam Season 6.
Singing Career and International Recognition
Chi Pu officially started her singing career in 2017. Her new music quickly got a lot of attention from the media and her fans.
In 2023, Chi Pu was one of 33 contestants on the Chinese reality show “Sisters Who Make Waves”. She finished with the sixth highest score in the final episode on July 22, 2023. She also won two special awards on the show. One was the "Fan Favorite" award for her song "Shut Up and Dance". The other was the "Overcoming Challenges" award. Her strong performances earned Chi Pu a spot in an 11-member girl group. This group will perform in the Chinese entertainment industry.
