The Story of Chibchacum and the Flood

One famous Muisca story tells us about Chibchacum. It explains why earthquakes happen.

Long ago, the Muisca people worshipped a rock. They also respected the wise god Bochica. Chibchacum became very angry about this. He decided to cause trouble.

Chibchacum went down to Earth. He saw a Muisca woman named Chié. She was getting water. Chibchacum tricked Chié into joining his plan. He promised she would be his queen. He said this would happen once Bochica was defeated.

Chié agreed, and soon many people started fighting. They believed they were better than others. They also began to lie. This led to a terrible civil war.

Bochica found out about Chibchacum's plan. He was very upset. Bochica punished Chié by turning her into a barn owl. Chibchacum's plan had failed.

But Chibchacum still wanted revenge. He used a powerful evil spell. This caused a huge flood to cover the land. The Muisca people were terrified. They screamed to Bochica for help. They promised to worship him if he saved them.

Bochica heard their cries. He created a new valley. This valley helped the floodwaters drain away. The land became safe again.

Bochica knew he had to punish Chibchacum for the flood. He gave Chibchacum a heavy curse. Chibchacum was forced to carry Mother Earth on his back forever.

To this day, the Muisca people believe something special. When there is an earthquake, it is Chibchacum. He is just shifting his heavy load on his back.
