What is the Children's Songbook?
The Children's Songbook replaced an older book called Sing with Me. That book was published in 1969. The songs in the Songbook help young children learn to live good lives. They also help children learn to follow God's commandments. This book is simpler than the main LDS Hymn Book. The songs are made to be easy for children to learn and sing.
How is the Songbook organized?
The songs in the book are grouped by different topics. These topics teach children about important ideas. Some topics include prayer, being thankful, and showing respect. Other topics cover Jesus Christ's life and the importance of family. There are also songs about loving God and feeling good when you do what is right. A few songs are for activities or about the beauty of nature. The book also has prelude music. This music can be played before Sacrament meetings or at home.
Who uses the songs?
Even though the songs are mostly for children, adults in the Church also use them. The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has sung some of these songs. They perform them on their weekly Sunday broadcast, Music and the Spoken Word. Some songs from the Songbook are also found in the Church's main hymnal. Most songs from either book can be sung in sacrament meeting. They can be part of a musical program after the sacrament is given.
Learning with Sign Language
One song in the book includes pictures for American Sign Language (ASL). These pictures teach you how to use sign language for the song's words. The Church's website also has ASL videos for about 45 songs. The Children's Songbook has a total of 268 songs.
New Songs and Future Plans
Since the Children's Songbook was published, a few new Primary songs have been added. Children in Primary sing these new songs. However, a new version of the Songbook has not yet been printed. Two new songs were written in 2008 and 2009. Their lyrics teach about the important roles of fathers and mothers. They also teach that children can help their families and grow up to be parents themselves.
On June 18, 2018, the Church announced plans to update the hymnbook and the Children's Songbook. This update will help meet the needs of Church members around the world. The new children's songbook will have the same songs in all languages.
