The Chillicothe Industrial Home for Girls was once a special place in Chillicothe, Missouri. It is also known today as the Chillicothe Correctional Center. This historic area includes many old buildings and structures. They were built between 1889 and 1970.

The buildings show different styles of architecture. These include Colonial Revival and Streamline Moderne. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This means it is an important historical site.

What Was the Industrial Home?

The Chillicothe Industrial Home for Girls was a place for young women. It aimed to provide them with education and life skills. It was a school and a home all in one. The goal was to help them learn and grow.

The original campus was designed by M. Fred Bell. He was a famous architect. The home helped many young women over the years. They learned useful skills for their future.

Buildings at the Home

The site has many interesting buildings. Each one played a part in the home's history. Some of the notable buildings include:

  • Hyde School (built 1922)
  • Stark Cottage (built 1937-1938)
  • Park Cottage (built 1937-1938)
  • Blair Cottage (built 1957-1958)
  • Donnelly Cottage (built 1957-1958)
  • Food Service Building (built 1957-1958)
  • Hearnes Office Building and Clinic (built 1967-1968)

There was also a Laundry building from around 1920. A Power House was built in 1888-1889 and updated later. These buildings show how the home grew over time.

From Home to Correctional Center

The Industrial Home for Girls closed its doors in 1980. It stopped being a place for young women. In 1981, the site was reopened. It became an adult correctional center.

A new facility, the Chillicothe Correctional Center, opened in 2008. The old Industrial Home site was then no longer needed. It remains a historic landmark in Chillicothe.
