The Chillicothe Water and Power Company Pumping Station is an old, important building in Chillicothe, Ohio, United States. Built in 1881, this Gothic Revival style building once held the city's waterworks and power plant. It was designed to be beautiful and was placed in Yoctangee Park. This location was chosen to make the park look nicer. It also helped keep it close to other parts of Chillicothe's first water system.

Building Chillicothe's Water System

In 1881 and 1882, Chillicothe built a new water supply system. This big project included several key parts. There was a well to get water from the ground. A huge reservoir was built to store water. The pumping station in Yoctangee Park was also a major part. Finally, water mains were laid. These pipes carried water to every part of the city.

What the Pumping Station Looked Like

The pumping station is a special building. It has one main story (floor). There is also a tall tower that is two and a half stories high. The building is made of strong brick. Its base, or foundation, is built from sandstone. The roof is covered with slate tiles.

From Pumping Water to Art

By the late 1970s, Chillicothe had built a newer water system. The city also got its electricity from other places. Because of this, the old pumping station was no longer needed. It became an empty building.

Saving a Historic Building

People had ideas to save and fix up the old station. They wanted to keep its history alive. Plans were made to turn it into a community center. In late 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important historic places. The building's unique architecture was a main reason for this honor. It was seen as an "ornament" that made Yoctangee Park special.

The Pump House Art Gallery Today

Today, the old pumping station has a new life. It has been changed into an art gallery. This gallery is now known as the Pump House Art Gallery. It is a place where people can enjoy art in a historic setting.
