Her Early Life and Education

Chioma Okereke was born in Benin City, Nigeria. When she was six years old, she moved to Britain. She went to different boarding schools there. Later, she studied law at University College London.

Her Journey as a Writer

Chioma Okereke started as a poet and short story writer. Her early works appeared in magazines like Bum Rush The Page and Callaloo. She was also a finalist in writing competitions. These included the Undiscovered Authors Competition in 2006. She also competed in the Daily Telegraph's Write a Novel in a Year Competition in 2007.

Her Novels and Awards

Her first novel, Bitter Leaf, came out in 2010. It was published by Virago Press. This book was a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. This award celebrates great new books from different countries.

In 2012, her short story "Trompette de la Mort" won an award. It was the first runner-up for the Costa Short Story Award. Her writing was also featured in the Virago is 40 collection in 2013.
