History of CVASU
In 1995, the government of Bangladesh started two veterinary colleges. One of them was in Chittagong, called Chittagong Government Veterinary College (CGVC). This college began teaching students in January 1997. It was first part of the University of Chittagong.
Over time, people in Chittagong felt that CGVC should become its own university. They wanted a special university just for animal studies. Many journalists and teachers supported this idea. A social worker named Yusuf Chowdhury led a movement to make this happen. Because of his efforts, a building at CVASU is now named after him.
This movement worked! In 2005, the Prime Minister's Office decided to turn CGVC into a university. On February 2, 2006, it was officially opened as Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. It fully started its work on August 7, 2006. At first, it only had a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Now, it has four faculties, including Food Science Technology, Fisheries, and Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
University Leaders
The main leaders of universities in Bangladesh are called Vice-Chancellors. They are chosen by the President of Bangladesh. Since 2006, CVASU has had several Vice-Chancellors.

University Campuses
CVASU has a main campus and a few other special campuses for research and training.
Main Campus
The main campus of CVASU is in the Khulshi area of Chattogram city. It has been active since 1995. This campus is home to three main study areas: Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Technology, and Fisheries.
Students can live in two residential halls on the main campus. Abdullah Al Noman Hall is for male students, and Bijoy 71 Hall is for female students. The campus also has a Shaheed Minar, which is a monument to remember those who died in the 1952 Language Movement.
Other important places on the main campus include the S.A. Quaderi Teaching Veterinary Hospital, a bank, a medical center, and a central field for sports. There's also a nice garden called CVASU Garden.
Anatomy Museum
This is the first anatomy museum in Bangladesh. It was built in 2016. The museum is managed by the university's Department of Anatomy and Histology. It has many interesting things to see. You can find preserved animals like horses, cows, deer, camels, and even crocodiles. There are also animal models, bones, and slides for studying.
Fisheries Museum
The Fisheries Museum at CVASU is located in the university's main administrative building. It was opened in 2018. This museum is about 2,500 square feet in size. It displays around 200 types of freshwater fish from Bangladesh's rivers and lakes. It also has 150 types of marine fish from the sea.
The fish are kept in glass jars with special chemicals. There are also sections for shellfish, snails, corals, and aquatic plants. You can even see models of traditional fishing boats. A large aquarium shows a living underwater world with 25–30 different fish species. Each display tells you the fish's scientific name and common name.
S.A. Qaderi Teaching Veterinary Hospital
This hospital started in 1998 to help students learn about animal health. In 2002, it was officially named Shahedul Alam (S.A.) Qaderi Teaching Veterinary Hospital. Since 2007, it has also been treating animals from the public.
The hospital helps students get hands-on experience. They learn to treat many kinds of animals, including farm animals like cows and goats, pets like dogs and cats, and even some wild animals. Students learn about surgeries, diagnosing diseases, and giving treatments.
This hospital is in Chattogram city. It treats about 60 to 70 animals every day from the city and nearby areas. Students work with their teachers to help diagnose and treat the animals.
Student Halls
CVASU has four residential halls where students can live. Two are on the main campus, and two are on the Hathazari campus. These halls are named after important people who helped the university.
- Bir Muktijoddha Abdullah Al Noman Hall
- Bijoy 2024 Hall
- Dr. Nazir Ahmed Hall (Hathazari Campus)
- Begum Rokeya Hall (Hathazari Campus)
Cox's Bazar Outreached Campus
This campus is mainly for research related to the sea. It focuses on projects about marine life. They are building facilities like hatcheries here. The Fisheries department also started crab farming at this campus.
Hathazari Research and Farm Based Campus
This campus is located in Hathazari Upazila in Chittagong. It is used for research and has animal farms. New institutes and faculties are planned for this campus. There are two student halls here: Dr. Nazir Ahmed Hall for boys and Begum Rokeya Hall for girls. In 2024, CVASU opened a new Teaching Veterinary Hospital on this campus, focusing on treating farm animals.
Teaching and Training Pet Hospital and Research Center
This is the first pet hospital of its kind in Bangladesh. It's located in Purbachal, Dhaka, and was opened in 2018. This hospital is just for pets like dogs, cats, and other companion animals. It also serves as a training and research center for veterinary students. About 40–50 pets are treated here every day. Both this hospital and the S.A. Quaderi hospital have modern equipment like X-ray machines and ultrasound.
How to Get Admitted
If you want to study at CVASU as an undergraduate, you take a special admission test. This single test is used for seven different universities that teach agricultural sciences. After the test, students choose their subject and campus based on their scores and what they prefer.
Special Institutes
CVASU has several institutes that focus on specific areas of study and research.
Poultry Research and Training Center (PRTC)
The PRTC was started in 2008. It focuses on research and training related to poultry, which means chickens, ducks, and other birds raised for food. Scientists here have even created a new type of chicken that grows fast but tastes like local chickens.
Institute of Coastal Biodiversity, Marine Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation
This institute is located at the Cox's Bazar campus. It studies the plants and animals found along the coast, marine fish, and how to protect wildlife.
The Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition (IFSN)
The IFSN is a special institute under CVASU. It studies food science, how to process and preserve food, and how to make sure food is safe to eat. It also offers higher education and research in these areas.
