Mohammed Shahabuddin, born on December 10, 1949, is a Bangladeshi leader. He has been the 16th and current President of Bangladesh since 2023. He was chosen by the main political party, the Awami League, and became president without anyone running against him in the 2023 election. Before becoming president, he worked as a judge and also helped fight corruption as a commissioner from 2011 to 2016.

Early Life and Education
Mohammed Shahabuddin was born on December 10, 1949. His birthplace was in the area of Pabna District, which was then part of East Bengal in Pakistan. Today, this area is part of Bangladesh. His parents were Sharfuddin Ansari and Khairunnessa.
Shahabuddin attended Pabna's Purbatan Gandhi School. Later, he went to Radhanagar Majumdar Academy. He finished his SSC exam there in 1966. He then studied at Govt. Edward College, Pabna. He earned his HSC in 1968 and his bachelor's degree in 1972. In 1974, he received a master's degree in psychology from the University of Rajshahi. He then studied law at Shahid Aminuddin Law College, finishing in 1975.
Career Highlights
Shahabuddin was an important student leader in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a leader for the Awami League's student groups. He was also a freedom fighter in the Bangladesh Liberation War. After the leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed in 1975, Shahabuddin was put in prison for three years.
In 1982, Shahabuddin began his career as a judge. He worked his way up to become a District and Sessions Judge. This is a very high position in Bangladesh's judicial system. He was also elected to lead the Judicial Service Association in 1995 and 1996.
The government asked Shahabuddin to help with the trials of those who killed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He also served as an Election Commissioner for the Awami League's national meeting in 2022. Before becoming president, he was on the board of directors for Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited. He resigned from this role in February 2023.

Becoming President
The Awami League political party chose Shahabuddin as their candidate for president. On February 12, 2023, he submitted his application to the Election Commission. He was the only person to apply for the position. The next day, on February 13, 2023, he was officially elected. This happened because no one else ran against him. The Chief Election Commissioner, Kazi Habibul Awal, announced the result.
Taking Office
Shahabuddin became the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. The ceremony took place at the Bangabhaban, which is the President's official residence. The Speaker of the Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, led the oath. Many important people attended, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Chief Justice. After the oath, Shahabuddin and the previous president, Mohammad Abdul Hamid, officially switched places.
Key Actions as President
In December 2023, President Shahabuddin sent a new Labour Bill back to Parliament. He asked them to look at it again before it became law.
In August 2024, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position. This happened after a large non-cooperation movement. President Shahabuddin addressed the country and confirmed her resignation. He then started meeting with political leaders to form a new temporary government. He also dissolved the parliament. He ordered the release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia from house arrest.
On August 6, as the head of the armed forces, Shahabuddin made changes in the Bangladesh Army. He appointed Nasimul Gani as Secretary of the President's Office. On August 8, he swore in Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus as the new Chief Adviser. He also swore in the members of the new temporary government. On August 10, after the Chief Justice resigned, President Shahabuddin appointed Syed Refaat Ahmed as the new Chief Justice.
Personal Life
Mohammed Shahabuddin has been married to Rebecca Sultana since November 1972. Rebecca Sultana used to work for the government. She also taught at Primeasia University and started an organization called Friends for Children. They have one son named Arshad Adnan. Their son has produced several films in Bangladesh.
Legacy
In 2020, the Pabna Municipality built a park. They named it "Bir Muktijoddha Mohammad Sahabuddin Chuppu Amusement Park" to honor him.
