Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was born on October 6, 1966. She is a well-known politician from Bangladesh. She made history by becoming the first female Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (which is like the head of the parliament in Bangladesh). She held this important job from April 2013 until September 2024. When she first became Speaker, she was 46 years old, making her the youngest person ever to hold that position. She also led the executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 2014 to 2017. Before these roles, she served as a minister for women and children's affairs in Bangladesh.

Early Life and Family

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was born in Noakhali, Bangladesh. Her father, Rafiqullah Chaudhury, was a government officer. He even worked as a secretary for the Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1972. Her mother, Naiyar Sultana, was also a respected public servant. She was a member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission and a principal at Dhaka College.

Education and Studies

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury completed her high school education at Holy Cross Girls' High School and College in 1983 and 1985. She then went to the University of Dhaka to study law. There, she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in law in 1989 and 1990.

She received a special scholarship called the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. This allowed her to study in the United Kingdom at the University of Essex. In 2000, she earned her PhD degree. Her studies focused on constitutional law and human rights. The University of Essex also gave her an honorary PhD degree in July 2014.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is a member of the Bangladesh Awami League political party. In March 2009, she was elected as a Member of Parliament for one of the special seats reserved for women. She then became the state minister for the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (Bangladesh). She worked in this role until April 2013, when she was chosen to be the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.

In June 2010, she received the Asia Society's Humanitarian Service Award. This award recognized her efforts to stop violence against women. It also honored her work in helping women gain more power and find jobs in Bangladesh.

In January 2014, she was elected as an MP for the Rangpur-6 area. This seat became available after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left it. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was the only candidate, so she won without a contest. The same day, she was nominated to be the Speaker again. She took her oath as Speaker of the 10th Parliament on January 29, 2014. This made her the first person to serve as Speaker for two terms in a row.

Leading the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

In October 2014, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected to lead the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). She was the chairperson for three years. This was a very important achievement, as she was the first person from Bangladesh to hold such a high position in an international group. The CPA is a large group of parliaments from countries that were once part of the British Empire. Bangladesh has been a member since 1973.

During her time as CPA chairperson, she attended and led many important events. In March 2015, she spoke at an event in London, UK. Queen Elizabeth II and other important people were there. She also opened a CPA conference in Nairobi, Africa, in August 2015. In September 2015, she spoke at a United Nations summit in New York. She talked about how to reduce inequality and empower women and girls. As Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament, she also met with leaders from India and China.

Awards and Advocacy

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also received a Women Leadership Achievement Award in 2015. She spoke at a seminar and encouraged everyone to include women in all areas of development. She said that women and others must work together to build women's leadership around the world. She also stressed that governments, non-government groups, and businesses should work together to achieve fairness between genders in society.

Before becoming a full-time politician, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was a lawyer. She worked at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. She was part of a team of lawyers who handled cases for Sheikh Hasina between 2007 and 2008. Her legal work focused on human rights, constitutional law, and women's issues. She also taught at several universities, including the University of Dhaka.

Personal Life

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is married to Syed Ishtiaque Hossain. He works as a consultant in the pharmaceutical industry. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
