Tarique Rahman (born on November 20, 1965), also known as Tarique Zia, is a Bangladeshi politician. He has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 2026. He also serves as the leader, or Chairman, of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Since 2026, he has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dhaka-17.

Tarique Rahman is the eldest son of Ziaur Rahman, who was the sixth President, and Khaleda Zia, who was the ninth Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He became well-known in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party during his mother's time as Prime Minister.

After a major election in 2008, he moved to London for medical treatment and due to political challenges. During a previous government, he faced legal challenges. However, in 2024, after a significant political change in Bangladesh, a court reviewed his cases and cleared him of all charges. He then returned to Bangladesh in late 2025. The BNP won a large victory in the 2026 general election, and Tarique Rahman became Prime Minister. This marked a new chapter in Bangladesh's political history.

About Tarique Rahman: A Leader in Bangladesh

Early Life and School Days

Tarique Rahman was born on November 20, 1965, in Dacca, which is now Dhaka, Bangladesh. He comes from a well-known Bengali family from Bogura District. His father, Ziaur Rahman, was a military officer who later became the President of Bangladesh. His mother, Khaleda Zia, was a homemaker who later became the Prime Minister.

Tarique Rahman began his schooling at BAF Shaheen College Dhaka. He also studied at St. Joseph Higher Secondary School. He completed his secondary education at Dhaka Residential Model College and his higher secondary education at Adamjee Cantonment College. He started studying law at the University of Dhaka but later changed to International Relations. However, he decided to pursue business in textiles and shipping before finishing his university studies.

Starting His Political Journey

Rahman started his political career in 1988. He became a member of the BNP in his local area of Gabtali, Bogura. He was very active in the BNP's election campaigns in 1991. His mother, Khaleda Zia, was a candidate in these elections. This was a time when Bangladesh was moving from military rule to an elected government.

After the BNP won the 1991 election, Rahman continued to work with the party in Bogra. In the 1996 national election, he did not run for a parliamentary seat himself. Instead, he helped coordinate campaigns for his mother. Between 1996 and 2001, when another party was in power, Rahman was involved in opposition activities. In the 2001 national election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a large majority. During the BNP-led government from 2001 to 2006, a serious incident occurred at a political gathering. Mr. Rahman later faced legal proceedings related to this event, but in 2024, a court reviewed the case and cleared him of the charges.

In September 2008, Tarique Rahman traveled to London for medical treatment. He left Bangladesh during a time of political change.

Becoming a Senior Party Leader

On December 8, 2009, Rahman was chosen as the Senior Vice Chairman of the BNP. This happened at the party's 5th National Council in Dhaka. He had previously served as the party's Senior Joint Secretary General. A recorded speech from him was shared at the council. In his speech, he talked about his health and the need for continued medical treatment.

His mother, Khaleda Zia, mentioned that he would return to active politics after his medical treatment was complete. In 2014, Tarique Rahman shared a video message on YouTube. In it, he asked people to boycott the national election that was scheduled for the next day.

Leading the Party from Afar

In November 2018, Rahman used Skype to interview people seeking nominations for the BNP. These candidates were preparing for the 2018 national election. After a major political change in Bangladesh, he said he would return to the country once the legal cases against him were resolved. He also promised to support the new interim government's reform process.

Coming Back to Bangladesh

On December 25, 2025, Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh. He came back with his wife, Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter, Zaima Rahman. This ended his time living abroad since 2008. Sadly, five days after his return, his mother, Khaleda Zia, passed away after a long illness. On January 9, 2026, Tarique Rahman became the Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was elected to represent Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament).
