Chloris texensis, also known as Texas windmill grass, is a special type of grass. It is found only in Texas, USA. This means it is endemic to Texas. You can find it growing in the coastal prairies of the state.

What is Texas Windmill Grass?

Texas windmill grass is a perennial grass. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows in clumps, with stems reaching about 30 to 45 centimeters tall. That's roughly the length of a school ruler! Its leaves can be up to 15 centimeters long.

How Does It Look?

The plant has a unique flower part called an inflorescence. This part looks like a panicle, which is a group of flowers on a branched stem. It has several long branches that spread out like the blades of a windmill. These branches are arranged in a circle. Each branch can be up to 20 centimeters long. Along the end part of each branch, there are small flower clusters called spikelets. You can find about 3 to 4 spikelets in every centimeter.

When Does It Flower?

Texas windmill grass usually flowers in the fall. You can see its blooms in October and November.

Where Does It Grow?

This grass likes to grow in open areas of the coastal prairie. These are places where there aren't too many other plants. It often grows near mima mounds. Mima mounds are small, natural hills found in grasslands.

Plant Neighbors

Other plants that grow around these mounds include Hymenoxys texana, Thurovia triflora, and Rayjacksonia aurea. Sometimes, it also grows near the rare Machaeranthera aurea.

Why Is It Important?

Texas windmill grass is an important part of the coastal prairie ecosystem. It helps keep the soil healthy and provides habitat for small animals.

What Threats Does It Face?

Sadly, this plant is in danger. Its home, or habitat, is being lost. This is mostly because of new buildings and roads being built. This development is a big problem, especially in the Houston area. Protecting its habitat is important to help this unique grass survive.
