The spectacled parrotfish (scientific name: Chlorurus perspicillatus) is a colorful marine fish. It's also known by its Hawaiian name, uhu-uliuli. This special fish lives only around the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. You can find it in calm lagoons and on coral reefs.

Young spectacled parrotfish are brown with white spots and stripes. As they grow, they can reach about 24 inches (60 cm) long.

What Does the Spectacled Parrotfish Look Like?

The spectacled parrotfish can grow up to 1 foot (30 centimeters) long. It has a rounded, oval-shaped head and a square tail. Its jaws are smooth, like a beak.

Color Changes

These fish have different colors depending on if they are male or female.

  • Male fish are mostly blue with thin, bright pink edges on their scales.
  • Female fish are dark purple-grey with red fins. They also have a white section on their tail where it joins their body.

Interestingly, many spectacled parrotfish start their lives as females. As they get older, they can change into males. When this happens, their colors and patterns often change too!

Where Do Spectacled Parrotfish Live?

The spectacled parrotfish lives on coral reefs and in areas facing the open ocean. They can be found in waters up to 200 feet (60 meters) deep.

Helping the Reef

These fish are very important for the health of coral reefs. They eat algae, which is a type of plant that can grow too much on the reef. By eating algae, parrotfish help keep the coral healthy and stop it from being overgrown.

Unlike some other types of parrotfish, the spectacled parrotfish usually swims alone. Sometimes, you might see them in small groups.

Cultural Stories of the Uhu

The uhu (parrotfish) is an important fish in many traditional Hawaiian stories. One famous story is about a boy named Puniakaia.

Puniakaia and the Uhu

In the story, Puniakaia catches a small uhu and takes care of it. The fish grows big and strong. Puniakaia then releases it back into the ocean. Later, when Puniakaia and his people need food, he calls upon his uhu. The big uhu then brings many fish for everyone to eat. This shows how important fish like the uhu were to the Hawaiian people.

Protecting the Spectacled Parrotfish

The uhu-uliuli is special because it lives only in Hawaii. This means it is an endemic species.

Unfortunately, the number of spectacled parrotfish in Hawaii has been going down. This is mainly because too many fish are being caught by people who fish for fun or to sell. Efforts are being made to help protect these important fish and keep their populations healthy.
