Chockie is a small community located in Atoka County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's about 11 miles northeast of a town called Stringtown. Chockie is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
A Look Back in Time
Chockie has an interesting history, especially with its post office. A post office was first opened here on June 17, 1891. Back then, this area was known as Indian Territory, before Oklahoma became a state.
When the post office first opened, the community was called Chickiechockie. But a few years later, on February 8, 1904, its name was officially changed to Chockie. The first post office in Chockie closed its doors on March 15, 1905.
Later, on August 30, 1916, another nearby post office, which was called Rich, also changed its name to Chockie. This second Chockie post office continued to serve the community until November 30, 1934, when it was closed.
How Chockie Got Its Name
The community of Chockie was named after two sisters! Their names were Chickie and Chockie, and they were the daughters of a man named Charles LeFlore.
One of the sisters, Chickie, later married Lee Cruce. He became a very important person in Oklahoma's history. Lee Cruce served as the second governor of Oklahoma. A governor is like the main leader of a state.
