The chocolate fish is a super popular sweet treat in New Zealand. It's a special part of what people call "Kiwi culture". If someone does a really good job, they might be told, "Give that kid a chocolate fish!" It's a fun way to say "well done!"
What is a Chocolate Fish?
A chocolate fish looks just like a small fish. It's usually about 5 to 8 centimeters long. Inside, it has soft, fluffy pink or white marshmallow. This marshmallow is covered in a thin layer of yummy milk chocolate.
How Are They Made?
The chocolate on the fish looks like it has ripples or "scales." These aren't actually carved in. They are made when the fish moves under a special blower. This blower gently pushes the wet chocolate back, making it look like scales. Many companies make chocolate fish, but Cadbury is one of the most famous. Smaller versions of the chocolate fish are sometimes called "sprats" by New Zealanders.
A Bit of History
For a short time in the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was even a Tip Top chocolate fish ice cream! In 2019, the chocolate fish became even more popular. It was added to the Cadbury Favourites box, which is a collection of different Cadbury chocolates.
