Famous Visitors: Butch Cassidy
An American outlaw named Butch Cassidy lived near Cholila for a few years. He was there with his friend, the Sundance Kid, and Sundance's girlfriend, Etta Place. They bought a ranch in 1901. They lived there until about 1905.
Their old cabin is about 7.5 miles north of the village. A travel writer named Bruce Chatwin visited it in the 1970s. At that time, the cabin was in bad shape. In 2007, parts of the cabin were fixed up.
Cassidy, Sundance, and Place owned a large ranch of about 12,355 acres. They raised sheep, cattle, and horses there. They had to sell their ranch and leave because detectives found out where they were. A local sheriff warned them that the detectives were coming.
