Baseball Journey
Getting Started in Baseball
Chris Dickerson was born in Hollywood, California, and went to Notre Dame High School. He was a talented young player. In 2000, the New York Yankees drafted him right out of high school. However, Dickerson chose to go to college instead of turning pro right away.
He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he played college baseball for three years. Playing college baseball helped him improve his skills before joining the major leagues.
Major League Debut with the Reds
In 2003, the Cincinnati Reds drafted Dickerson, and this time he signed a contract. He made his MLB debut with the Reds on August 12, 2008. Just a few days later, on August 15, he hit his very first home run in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
By the 2009 season, Dickerson had earned a starting spot in the outfield. He became known for his amazing defensive plays, often making highlight reels for his great catches.
A Quick Stop in Milwaukee
On August 9, 2010, the Reds traded Dickerson to the Milwaukee Brewers. He played 25 games for the Brewers that season before moving to his next team.
Playing for the Famous Yankees
In March 2011, Dickerson was traded to the New York Yankees. He played his first game as a Yankee on May 17. For part of his time with the Yankees, he played for their top minor league team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, to get more playing time. He was called back up to the major league team in September 2011 and September 2012.
Highlights with the Orioles
Dickerson signed with the Baltimore Orioles for the 2013 season. He had some exciting moments with the team. On May 21, he hit two home runs in a single game for the first time in his career.
A few days later, on May 31, he hit a walk-off home run. A walk-off home run is a special home run hit in the last inning that wins the game instantly for the home team.
Final Seasons in the MLB
After leaving the Orioles, Dickerson signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in January 2014. A few months later, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians, where he finished the 2014 MLB season.
Over the next few years, Dickerson signed minor league contracts with the Toronto Blue Jays and later returned to the Baltimore Orioles organization. He played for their minor league teams, the Bowie Baysox and the Norfolk Tides, before retiring from professional baseball.
Helping the Planet
Outside of baseball, Chris Dickerson is also known for his work to help the environment. He co-founded an organization called Players for the Planet. This foundation brings athletes together to teach communities about environmental issues.
Many other famous athletes, like Chase Utley, Ryan Braun, and Jacoby Ellsbury, are part of the foundation's board. They work together to make a positive impact on the world.
