About Chris Lowe's Early Life

Christopher Sean Lowe was born and grew up in Blackpool, England. He went to Arnold School. Music was a big part of his family. His grandfather played the trombone in a comedy jazz band called The Nitwits. His mother was a dancer, and his father could play the piano by ear.

Chris learned to play the trombone and piano himself. He was part of his school's orchestra and dance band. He even studied music as a main subject in high school.

How Chris Started Playing Music

Chris played the trombone in a dance band called One Under the Eight. This band played popular songs like "Hello Dolly" and "La Bamba". He also joined the Musicians' Union with them. Chris also played in a local brass band and briefly played keyboards for a school rock band called Stallion.

Chris Lowe's College Days

In 1978, Chris began studying architecture at the University of Liverpool. In 1981, while working at an architecture office in London, he designed a staircase for a building. It was during this time that he met Neil Tennant in a music shop in London.

Even as their music career began, Chris continued his architecture studies. He earned a degree in architecture. However, he decided to focus on the Pet Shop Boys full-time with Neil Tennant in 1985. He did not complete the final steps to become a qualified architect.
