Early Life and Film Passion
Chris Stuckmann was born in Boston Heights, Ohio. He grew up with two older sisters and has some German family background. From a young age, Chris loved movies and started writing short reviews when he was just 14 years old.
His biggest inspiration was the famous film critic Roger Ebert. Chris especially enjoyed the TV show Siskel & Ebert & the Movies. Watching it taught him how to have a respectful debate about films.
Chris says that seeing the movie Signs in theaters as a child made him want to become a filmmaker. He looks up to directors like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, M. Night Shyamalan, and Christopher Nolan. Throughout high school, Chris made many homemade movies and short films with his friends and family.
Chris Stuckmann's Career
YouTube Success
Chris started posting movie reviews on YouTube when he was in his twenties. His first review came out in 2009. At first, his reviews were short videos called "Quick Movie Reviews." Back then, only a few other people were reviewing movies on YouTube.
Over time, Chris expanded his reviews to include TV shows, anime, and video games. Most of his reviews do not spoil the movie's plot. However, he sometimes releases extra "spoiler reviews" for films that need a deeper discussion.
Chris has become one of the most popular film critics on YouTube. As of December 2023, he has over 2.05 million subscribers. A writer from Moviepilot even called his channel the best one for movie fans to follow. They praised his passionate and well-written reviews.
In July 2021, Chris shared that he would spend less time on film criticism videos. He wanted to focus on making his own movie. He also started making more discussion videos and helpful guides for people who want to learn about filmmaking.
Books and Short Films
In 2016, Chris published his first book, The Film Buff’s Bucket List: The 50 Movies of the 2000s to See Before You Die. A year later, he directed and wrote a short film called Auditorium 6. In April 2018, Chris released his second book, Anime-Impact: The Movies and Shows that changed the World of Japanese Animation.
Film Projects
Chris Stuckmann's first full-length movie as a director is a horror film called Shelby Oaks. In July 2021, it was announced that he had signed a deal to make this film. The plan was to start filming in his home state of Ohio in late 2021.
However, filming was delayed until 2022 because they needed more money. Chris decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds. This would give him more creative freedom for his film. The Kickstarter began in March 2022 and quickly became the most-funded horror film on the site. It easily passed its goal of $250,000. The campaign ended on March 27, raising an amazing $1,390,845!
In May 2024, it was announced that famous filmmakers Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy, and Melinda Nishioka would be executive producers for Shelby Oaks. The movie had its first showing at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 20, 2024. In June 2024, Chris also signed with The Gersh Agency for his film work.
In July 2024, the company Neon bought the rights to distribute the film worldwide. They plan to release Shelby Oaks in theaters on August 22, 2025.
Personal Life
Chris Stuckmann married Samantha Elizabeth, also known as Sam Liz, in 2014. In January 2021, he shared a video about his experiences with the Jehovah's Witness religion and how he left it in his early twenties to follow his dream of filmmaking.
On November 21, 2021, Chris announced that he and Liz had welcomed twin boys, Fox and Grayson, on July 7, 2021. In the video, Liz also talked about her health journey and challenges with fertility treatments.
