Early Life and Film Inspiration
Chris Stuckmann grew up in Boston Heights, Ohio, with two older sisters. He became interested in movies and reviewing them at a young age. When he was just fourteen, he started writing short reviews of films.
A big inspiration for Chris was the famous film critic Roger Ebert. He especially enjoyed watching Ebert's TV show, Siskel & Ebert & the Movies. Chris learned from this show that people could have respectful debates about movies.
Watching the movie Signs in theaters as a child made Chris want to become a filmmaker. He looks up to famous directors like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, M. Night Shyamalan, and Christopher Nolan. Throughout high school, Chris made many homemade movies and short films with his friends and family.
Chris Stuckmann's Career
Starting on YouTube
Chris Stuckmann began sharing his movie reviews on YouTube in 2009. His first reviews were part of a short series called "Quick Movie Reviews." When he started, only a few other video bloggers were reviewing films on YouTube. Over time, he also began reviewing TV shows, anime, and video games.
In 2016, he published his first book, The Film Buff's Bucket List: The 50 Movies of the 2000s to See Before You Die. A year later, he directed and wrote a short film called Auditorium 6. In April 2018, Chris released his second book, Anime-Impact: The Movies and Shows that changed the World of Japanese Animation.
Chris Stuckmann has become one of the most popular film critics on YouTube. As of December 2024, he has over 2.03 million subscribers. Many people praise his passionate and clear reviews.
Focusing on Filmmaking
In 2021, Chris Stuckmann announced a change in his YouTube content. He decided to review fewer films and stop criticizing "bad" movies. Instead, he wanted to focus on analyzing films, discussing filmmaking, and helping others learn about it.
He explained two main reasons for this change. First, he sees himself primarily as a filmmaker and wanted to spend more time on his own film projects. Second, his popularity gave him the chance to be more involved in making movies. He realized how much effort goes into creating even an average film. He said he no longer felt comfortable speaking negatively about movies or filmmakers. He felt it would be strange to make movies himself while criticizing other filmmakers.
Film Projects
Chris Stuckmann has been working on his own film projects. On July 6, 2021, it was announced that he signed with Gotham Group. He had several horror movie scripts in development.
Shelby Oaks Film
His first full-length movie as a director is a horror film called Shelby Oaks. It was planned to start filming in late 2021 in his home state of Ohio. However, filming was delayed until 2022 due to not enough money and a possible strike in the film industry. Chris decided to start a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the film. This would give him more creative freedom.
The Kickstarter campaign began in March 2022. It quickly became the most-funded horror film on the site. It also easily passed its original goal of $250,000. The campaign ended on March 27, 2022, raising an impressive $1,390,845.
In May 2024, it was announced that famous filmmakers Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy, and Melinda Nishioka were executive producers for Shelby Oaks. The movie had its first showing at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 20, 2024. In June 2024, Chris Stuckmann signed with The Gersh Agency for his film work, including Shelby Oaks.
In July 2024, Neon, a film company, bought the rights to distribute Shelby Oaks worldwide. They planned for the movie to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025.
