Christopher Ryan Thomas (born October 3, 1982) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for Pike High School and the University of Notre Dame.

High School Basketball Star

Chris Thomas led the Pike High School Red Devils to two state championships. This happened during his four years playing for the team. In 2001, he was named "Mr. Basketball" for Indiana. This award goes to the best high school basketball player in the state. He was also chosen as a McDonald's All-American in 2001. This means he was one of the top high school players in the country.

College Career at Notre Dame

Chris Thomas chose to play basketball at the University of Notre Dame. He studied economics there. He became one of the best players in Notre Dame's history. He holds many school records.

He is fourth all-time in scoring for Notre Dame with 2,195 points. He is also the school's all-time leader in assists. He made 833 assists during his college career. This ranks him fourth in NCAA history for assists. His average of 18.0 points per game is 11th best at Notre Dame.

Chris also ranks second in school history for 3-point shots made. He made 302 of them. He is first in steals with 244. He also has the only triple-double in Notre Dame history. This happened in his first game against the University of New Hampshire. He scored 24 points, had 11 assists, and 11 steals.

He was named the point guard for the First Team All Notre Dame team. This team was created to celebrate 100 years of Notre Dame basketball. Chris is one of only three players in NCAA history to get over 2,000 points and 800 assists.

Freshman Year Success

As a freshman, Chris Thomas won many awards. He was named the Big East Conference Freshman of the Year. He also won National Freshman of the Year from Basketball Times and Basketball News. He was the team's second-highest scorer. He averaged 15.6 points per game.

Sophomore Year Highlights

Chris was recognized as an honorable mention by the Associated Press. His scoring average went up to 18.7 points per game. He became the 43rd player at Notre Dame to score 1,000 career points. He was only the seventh player to reach this mark in his second year.

After this great season, Chris thought about joining the 2003 NBA draft. He worked out with several NBA teams. However, he was not guaranteed to be a first-round pick. So, he decided to return to Notre Dame for his junior year.

Junior Year Records

Chris was again named an Associated Press Honorable Mention. He was also on the BIG EAST second-team for the second year in a row. He became Notre Dame's all-time leader in assists with 638. He set this record in a game against Connecticut. He is the only Notre Dame player with over 1,700 points and 600 assists.

Senior Year Dedication

Chris Thomas played in every single game during his time at Notre Dame. He started all 128 games. He even played with a knee injury for part of his senior season. Despite this, he still played very well. He averaged 14.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Professional Basketball Journey

After college, Chris Thomas played professional basketball for several years.

  • From 2006 to 2007, he played for Anwil in Poland.
  • From 2007 to 2009, he played for CB Murcia in Spain.
  • During the 2009-2010 season, he played for Baloncesto Fuenlabrada in Spain. He left this team due to financial issues.
  • He then signed a two-year contract with Anwil Wloclawek in Poland. His team won the Cup in Poland.
  • Later, he played for Hapoel Gilboa Galil in Israel. His team finished second in the league. He also helped them win the Balkan League Championship. This was the club's first European title.
