The Story of Christ Church
Building and Early Changes
The first Christ Church building opened its doors in 1867. It was a place for the local community to gather and worship.
Over time, the church building saw some changes. In 1918, its tall spire was removed. Later, during the Second World War, the church's tower was damaged by a blast. It had to be taken down.
Damage and Demolition
In 2005, a powerful tornado hit Birmingham. Christ Church was badly damaged by this natural disaster. The damage was so severe that the church building could no longer be used safely.
A group called the Victorian Society tried to save the old church. This society works to protect historic buildings. However, despite their efforts, the damaged church building was taken down in 2007.
A New Beginning
Even though the old building was gone, the church community continued. A new, useful building was built in its place. This new building was officially opened in 2013.
Today, a small Christian community still meets there. They continue to serve the people of Sparkbrook, just as the church has done for many years.
