History of Christ Church
Building the Church
The first Christ Church building was opened in 1867. It was designed by architects named Medland, Maberley, and Medland. This church served the local community for many years.
Changes Over Time
The church building went through some big changes. In 1918, the tall, pointed part of the roof, called a spire, was taken down. Later, during the Second World War, the church tower was damaged by a large explosion. Because of this damage, the tower also had to be removed.
Damage and Demolition
In 2005, a strong windstorm, known as the 2005 Birmingham tornado, hit the area. Christ Church was badly damaged by this tornado. Even though a group called the Victorian Society tried to save the old building, it was too damaged. The church building was taken down, or demolished, in 2007.
A New Beginning
After the old church was demolished, a new building was created. This new building was officially opened in 2013. Today, a small but active Christian group still meets there. They continue to serve the people living in Sparkbrook.
