About the Painting

Artistic Style and Details

Zurbarán's painting shows Jesus on the cross. He painted Jesus's two feet nailed separately. Another famous Spanish artist, Diego Velázquez, also showed this detail in his 1632 painting, Christ Crucified.

During this time, artists often focused only on Jesus in their crucifixion paintings. They did not include many other people around the cross. This style was popular after a period called the Counter Reformation.
