Christian August Vulpius (born January 23, 1762 – died June 25, 1827) was a German writer who wrote novels and plays. He is best known for his exciting adventure stories. His sister, Christiane Vulpius, married the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

About His Life

Christian August Vulpius was born in Weimar, Germany. He went to college at the University of Jena and the University of Erlangen.

In 1790, he came back to Weimar. There, his sister Christiane was living with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a very important German writer. Goethe helped Vulpius find a job in Weimar.

While in Weimar, Vulpius started writing many romantic stories, plays, and operas. He was inspired by another writer named Christian Heinrich Spiess. Vulpius wrote about sixty different works.

His most famous (or perhaps infamous) book was Rinaldo Rinaldini, the Robber Captain, published in 1797. This book was a type of popular adventure story, sometimes called a "penny dreadful" because it was cheap and exciting. It was about a robber captain in Italy during the Middle Ages. Many people read it, and it was translated into other languages. Other writers even tried to copy his style.

In 1797, possibly because of Goethe's help, Vulpius got a job at the Weimar library. He worked his way up and became the main librarian in 1806. Christian August Vulpius passed away in Weimar on June 25, 1827.

His Stories on Screen

Vulpius's most famous adventure story, Rinaldo Rinaldini, the Robber Captain, has been made into films and TV shows:

  • Rinaldo Rinaldini (a movie from 1927) [1]
  • Rinaldo Rinaldini [de] (a TV series with 13 episodes made in 1968)
