Weimar is a city located in the middle of Germany, in the state of Thuringia. It is home to about 60,000 people and has a well-known university.
Weimar is famous for its past residents, especially the German poets Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. The city is also well known for the Weimar Republic, which was a democratic government founded here in 1919.

History of Weimar
Weimar has a long and interesting history. It was first mentioned in official records in the year 899. Over the centuries, it grew into an important cultural center.
Weimar's Golden Age
Weimar became very famous in the late 1700s and early 1800s. This period is often called Weimar's "Golden Age." During this time, many important thinkers and artists lived and worked in the city.
Famous Poets: Goethe and Schiller
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe moved to Weimar in 1775. He was a brilliant writer, poet, and scientist. His home in Weimar is now a museum.
Friedrich Schiller was another great German poet and playwright. He moved to Weimar in 1799 and became good friends with Goethe. Together, they helped make Weimar a center for German literature.
The Weimar Republic
After World War I, Germany needed a new government. In 1919, leaders met in Weimar to create a new democratic system. This new government was called the Weimar Republic. It was an important time for Germany, even though it faced many challenges. The Republic lasted until 1933.
Education and Culture
Weimar is still a city of learning and art today. It has several important institutions.
Bauhaus University
The Bauhaus University Weimar is a famous art and design school. It was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus movement changed how people thought about art, architecture, and design around the world.
Libraries and Museums
Weimar is home to many museums and libraries. The Duchess Anna Amalia Library is one of the most famous. It holds a huge collection of historical books. Sadly, a big fire damaged part of it in 2004, but much has been restored.

- Schloss Tiefurt and Schloss Ettersburg are other charming castles nearby.
