The Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was a state in Germany that existed from 1809 to 1920. It was formed when two smaller states, Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Eisenach, officially joined together. These two areas had already been ruled by the same person since 1741. This happened because the ruling family line in Saxe-Eisenach ended.
In 1815, the Duchy became a Grand Duchy, which meant it was a larger and more important state. In 1877, it was briefly called the Grand Duchy of Saxony, but people usually still used its old name. The Grand Duchy ended in 1918, along with other German monarchies (countries ruled by kings or dukes), after a revolution. It then became part of the new state of Thuringia within the Weimar Republic.
The ruler of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach had a very long title. It included being the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, a Landgrave in Thuringia, and a Margrave of Meißen. These titles showed all the different lands and areas they controlled.
