Christian Cooper (born in 1963) is an American writer and editor. He writes about science and also creates comics. Christian Cooper lives in New York City. In 2023, he published his book, Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World. This book shares his experiences with birdwatching.
Christian Cooper's Career
Christian Cooper works as a senior editor for Health Science Communications. He also sometimes helps host a TV news show called Gay USA. In May 2022, National Geographic announced that Cooper would host his own show. The show is called Extraordinary Birder. It explores the world of birds with experts. The first episode aired in June 2023.
In June 2024, Christian Cooper won a Daytime Emmy Award. He won for being an Outstanding Daytime Personality on his show, Extraordinary Birder.
Christian Cooper's Work in Comics
Christian Cooper was one of the first editors at Marvel who was open about his identity. He helped bring new kinds of characters to comics. For example, he introduced Yoshi Mishima in the Starfleet Academy series. This series was even nominated for an award. He also introduced Victoria Montesi for Marvel. Cooper also created and wrote Queer Nation: The Online Gay Comic. He was also an editor for Alpha Flight #106. In this comic, the character Northstar was shown in a new way.
Cooper has written stories for Marvel Comics Presents. These stories often feature characters like Ghost Rider and Vengeance. He has also edited many X-Men comic collections. He also edited the last two issues of the Marvel Swimsuit Special.
Christian Cooper's Personal Life
Christian Cooper was born in 1963. His parents were both teachers. He first became interested in birds when he was a child. He read a birdwatching book during a road trip with his family. In the 1980s, he was the president of the Harvard Ornithological Club. This club is all about birds. Today, he is on the Board of Directors for NYC Audubon. This group works to protect birds and their habitats in New York City.
On May 25, 2020, Cooper was involved in an incident while birdwatching in Central Park. This event led to the creation of Black Birders Week. It also inspired his online comic book about fairness, called "It's a Bird". The comic was drawn by Alitha Martinez and published by DC Comics.
