Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Christian Nielsen Lund (born January 13, 1846 – died July 5, 1921) was an important person in the early history of Utah. He was a Mormon pioneer who traveled to Utah and later became a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature, which was like the state government before Utah became a state.

Lund was born in a place called Sest parish in Ribe county, Denmark. When he was 12 years old, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called the LDS Church.

Early Life and Journey to America

From 1865 to 1868, when he was a young man, Christian Lund served as a missionary for the LDS Church in Denmark. During this time, he was also a leader for a local church group, known as a branch president.

In 1868, Lund decided to move to the United States. He traveled on the very last sailing ship that the LDS Church used to bring people to America. After his journey, the church started using faster steamships. He was also part of the last group of Mormon pioneers to travel across the land before the railroad was finished. This railroad made travel much easier and faster for future pioneers.

Family Life

In 1869, Christian Lund married Petra Antonie Maria Jensen, who was also from Denmark. After she passed away, he married Anna Nielsen, another woman from Denmark.

Public Service in Utah

Soon after his first marriage, Lund settled in a town called Mount Pleasant in Utah Territory. He became very involved in his community. He held many important jobs in the city, including city recorder, a member of the city council, and even the mayor of Mount Pleasant. He also worked as a justice of the peace, which meant he helped solve local legal issues.

Christian Lund also served in the government of Utah Territory. He was a member of the territorial legislature in 1890 and again in 1894. This group made laws for the territory. He also took part in special meetings in 1882 and 1888. These meetings were about making Utah a state, but the United States Congress did not approve their requests at that time.

Church Leadership

Besides his work in the community, Christian Lund was also a leader in the LDS Church. From 1879 to 1880, he served another mission for the church, this time in Minnesota and nearby states.

From 1890 to 1896, he was the bishop of the Mount Pleasant Ward, which is a local church congregation. Then, from 1896 to 1898, he became the president of the Scandinavian Mission for the LDS Church. This meant he was in charge of all the missionaries and church activities in the Scandinavian countries.

In 1898, a new larger church area called the North Sanpete Stake was created. This stake covered the northern part of the county, and Christian Lund was chosen to be its very first president.
