The Christian Schlegel Farm is a very old and special farm complex. It is located in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. This farm is considered a historic district. A Look Back: The Farm's History

The Christian Schlegel Farm began around 1789. In its early years, it was a diverse farm. It grew different crops and raised various animals. Later, in the early 1900s, it changed into a dairy farm. This meant it focused mainly on producing milk. The farm is still owned by the Schlegel family today. This is a remarkable fact about its long history. It was officially recognized as a historic place in 1992.

The Christian Schlegel Farm has many interesting old buildings and structures. There are eleven main buildings that are important to its history. These buildings help tell the story of the farm.

The Main House and Other Homes

  • The main farmhouse was built in 1789. It is made of stone and has 1 1/2 stories. A part of it was added around 1850.
  • There is also a stone summer kitchen from 1789. This was a separate building used for cooking in hot weather.

  • A large wooden bank barn was built in 1887. Bank barns are special because they are built into a hillside. This allows easy access to different levels.

  • Other buildings include a tool shed, a milk house, and a smokehouse. The smokehouse was used to preserve meat.

  • The farm also has a family cemetery. This is where family members were buried.
  • A granite marker celebrates when Christian Schlegel bought the farm. This happened on August 15, 1738.
