Christian Wilhelm Braune (born July 17, 1831, died April 29, 1892) was a German scientist. He studied the human body, focusing on its structure and how it moves. He was famous for his detailed drawings of body parts. He also did important early work in a field called biomechanics. This is the study of how living things move.

Braune's Life and Work

Christian Braune was born in Leipzig, Germany. He studied at the Universities of Göttingen and Würzburg. In 1872, he became a professor at the University of Leipzig. He taught about the detailed structure of the human body.

Studying How We Move

Braune was inspired by a French scientist named Étienne-Jules Marey. Marey took many photos to study how people and animals move. He believed that movement was super important for all living things. Marey's ideas helped Braune start his own studies.

Braune began to study how humans walk. This is called "gait analysis." He published a book about it called Der Gang des Menschen. He wrote this book with another scientist, Otto Fischer. Their methods for studying walking are still used today.

Understanding Body Balance

Braune and Otto Fischer also worked together to find the center of gravity in the human body. The center of gravity is like the balance point of an object. They studied frozen human bodies to figure this out. They found the balance points for different parts of the body.

They also looked at the forces our muscles need to create. These forces help us move and overcome resistance. Their research helped us understand how our bodies work when we walk, run, or lift things.
