She earned a master's degree in Creative Writing from Sheffield Hallam University. Even before this, she had already published several picture books for children. Her first book was The Pig that Barked.

Her career changed in 2003. She signed a deal to publish a fantasy novel for teenagers. This book was The Riddles of Epsilon. It was published in 2005 and became very popular. A second book in the series was released in 2008.
